Hong Kong violinist Yip Wai Chow most recently became the newest addition to the acclaimed Cong Quartet, starting from Fall 2020. He is currently active as a performer in Hong Kong, Prior to his current commitment, Yip Wai served as the first violinist of the long standing, award-winning Montclaire String Quartet in West Virginia, USA, also as faculty at West Virginia State University. Yip Wai made his concerto debut at the age of 15 in Hong Kong City Hall, and won awards
in competitions such as the Brookline Symphony Concerto Competition, MTNA Young Artists Competition, and 1st prize in Japan-Hong Kong International Music Competition. As an avid musician both locally and internationally, he has made appearances in venues like Carnegie Hall, Eastman Theater, Hong Kong Cultural Center, Music Academy of the West, the Banff Center, and most frequently in recent years, Jordan Hall in Boston as a soloist, chamber musician and concertmaster. Notably, in the summer of 2018, Yip Wai toured with his string quartet of the time in Italy from Courmayeur to Moneglia with Zephyr Music Festival. Other than performing in concert halls, being the core artist roster of the Boston-based non-profit organization Fermata, Yip Wai regularly reaches out to
living rooms and workplaces to give informal yet intimate chamber music concerts, to advocate for chamber music outside of the traditional boundaries.
Yip Wai graduated from the New England Conservatory with a Master’s degree, under the tutelage of Ayano Ninomiya. Previously, he earned his Bachelor’s degree and Performer’s certificate from Eastman School of Music where he studied with Robin Scott and Charles Castleman.
